Islam Explained

Values in Islam

Islam is not only faith and rituals – it is also a rich ethical tradition with values that have shaped Muslim societies for centuries. Here are some of the most important.

01

Mercy (rahma)

God is described in the Quran as the Most Merciful and the Most Compassionate. Mercy is the quality Muslims are encouraged to show toward all creation – people, animals, and nature.

The Prophet Muhammad said: «Those who do not show mercy will not be shown mercy.»

02

Justice (adl)

Justice is a cornerstone of Islam. Muslims are encouraged to be just even when it is difficult – toward family, neighbors, and strangers.

The Quran says: «O you who believe, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for God, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.»

03

Honesty and trust

Truthfulness is one of the highest virtues in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad was known as «the trustworthy» (al-Amin) long before he became a prophet.

Lying, fraud, and betrayal are considered serious breaches of trust – both in personal relationships and in society.

04

Family and community

Family is fundamental in Islam. Parents should be treated with respect and care, and children have the right to care and safety.

Neighborhood also holds a special place – the Prophet encouraged caring for neighbors, regardless of faith.

05

Responsibility and charity

Muslims are encouraged to give of what they have – time, money, or care – to those in need. Charity (zakat) is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Helping others is not considered optional, but part of a responsible life before God.
